Depends on your house layout I guess. My router is downstairs in my living room behind my TV, and I'm currently on my computer upstairs in my office which I also use for gaming. In my office I have a wifi extender plugged into a socket, an ethernet cable running from it to a network switch, and another ethernet cable from that to my computer. My home is about ~1500 sq ft

I've done a ton of speed tests using multiple sites because I spent a good bit of money on the equipment and wanted to justify the purchases, and it's pretty much the same speed it is when I had my laptop directly connected to my router by ethernet cable (300/~300). But I'm also using a wifi6 router and wifi6 extender which may make a difference

Router: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RT-AX3000-802-11ax-Lifetime-Whole-Home/dp/B084BNH26P
Wifi extender: https://www.amazon.com/WiFi-6-Range-Extender-Booster/dp/B088H2FCHL

The part about the range on the ASUS router is kinda bs because without the extender the signal was weak and my gaming PC connection was laggy at times. The extender completely eliminated that problem while being in the same spot.
