#9:

Dirt is my #975 album of all time, but I also haven't given it a spin since my first listen a decade ago. I don't really have strong memories, so not much to say going in. And having listened, still not many strong feelings. I get that Alice in Chains is one of the definitive grunge bands, but as someone too young to have experienced it first hand, I never heard about them as much as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Soundgarden. Their sound is cool and distinctly harder than the other groups, though it again reinforces my idea that grunge was more of a marketing term than a legitimate genre. Nirvana could have easily been classified as punk, while Alice in Chains and Soundgarden could both fall into heavy metal. Pearl Jam is the only one that matches my conception of 'grunge' and nothing else. The funny thing is, "Post-Grunge" is absolutely a genre, but I feel all of those bands distinctly sound influenced by Pearl Jam and not the others.

As an album, this feels like one that has a distinct divide between the singles and b-sides. Unlike something like Achtung Baby, however, I feel like each track earns its place. A good listen throughout, but hard to rank in this way.

My ranking:
Rooster (#1484 all-time)
Would? (#2421 all-time)
Them Bones
Down in a Hole
Angry Chair
Dirt
Dam That River
Rain When I Die
Hate to Feel
God Smack
Junkhead
Sickman
