A year ago during Game of the Decade, I ran Game of the Decade of the Year (GotDotY). This contest adopted the historical User of the Year format from Board 8 lore to determine Board 8's Game of the Decade. If I remember correctly, Celeste won that contest. It's all a blur at this point a year later. However, I still want to run a UotY-formatted contest again and this time I feel more prepared and not just excited about GotD and restless from quarantine life.

Games are great, but this fomat might work better with more individualized participants. That's why this time around we are going to use video game characters! I present to you: Video Game Character of the Year (VGCotY). It doesn't have the same ring as gotdoty, but it's still derivative of User of the Year, which is the entire point of this contest. For the uninitiated, please check out the Board 8 wiki for what User of the Year was (and may this always be past tense) and how it operated: https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/User_of_the_Year

This contest will feature 200 (and maybe more if nomination totals support it) characters being thrown in a blender while we watch them spin 'round to a beautiful oblivion. There will eight rounds (plus a prelim round if nominations totals support it) we use to narrow the field until we are left with one winner. There will eventually be a Results and Discussion topic where I will post at the top all of the rounds and their voting formats. Most of them will be recognizable to those familiar with UotY, with the exception of Round 7 which has always been nebulous. Given my decision to use 200 characters as opposed to 220, the numbers will be different at the start as compared to normal, but it is mostly the same.

This topic will be used for nominations. Nominations are a trickier beast this time around since 1) there are more characters out there in the history of gaming than games in the 00s decade and 2) I don't have the GotD bracket to go off of to give me practically half the field from the start. As such, this will be a large process and I ask you all to be patient with me. I am very prone to human error as I will be tallying nominations largely by hand. In the next post, I will list the rules for nominating.
