Lots of starvation, a couple fires, sometimes people died from no firewood/homes, etc. Gotta expand in a balanced way -- make a stable food supply, then build some houses so there can be some kids (a.k.a. future workers) in the village. When I first played after coming back, I didn't bother with new houses, so when I did get around to it, there were a bunch of 60-year-old couples that weren't going to procreate.
