I suscribe to the theory it's not a real curse and the main girl had bulimia, it really checks out IMO. All the horror shit is stuff going in her mouth, throwing up, an eye in her cake, etc., she barely eats in the movie, she has an old picture of her where she's fat, the toothless old woman who curses her was stealing candy and had nasty/no teeth like someone with Bulimia would. A lot of the time other people don't react, too.

In the ending, even if she wasn't dragged to hell, she'd still be dead. And she backs up herself. The button, if anything, could symbolize a larger sized coat and that triggered her disorder.
