Fossil fuels have survived as long as they have because there is a financial incentive to keep them alive. This financial imperative to exist forced them to lobby and lobby for their own survival.

If you put that same amount of enthusiasm behind the bitcoin industry then there will be a will at work behind it's continued existence and the necessary adaptations could include an influx of renewable energy to trivialize the energy cost of mining bitcoin. If the two choices are "find new energy for bitcoin" or "allow the price of bitcoin to crash" I'm inclined to think the former choice will be supported. Especially with as much institutional money has been allocated into bitcoin at this point.
