A few years ago my wife was smoking a cigarette on our balcony and saw a black cat going from door to door meowing like the dickens. She went down as it was walking by and the cat was just a huge mush. I brought a little plate of food down and it ate it all with gusto (then attempted to steal my bag of treats from my hand, even tore the bag). We didn't want to leave him outside in case it was a neighbors cat or something, but we also have an older cat that the shelter said is not good with other animals. So, we separated my cat into my bedroom and brought the other cat in. We let him roam around and play a bit but then locked him in the bathroom with litter and some food. We took turns heading in there to pet him and he was so so so affectionate, I felt really bad keeping him locked in the room. However, as other users have pointed out, it is always best to sequester strange animals from your own since you don't know what diseases they carry.

The next morning we called a no kill shelter to come and pick him up. They came and got him and we felt bad. A week or so later I was off work and got someone at the door, which turned out to be an older woman that was caring for a cat colony close to my apartments. Apparently, the black cat (we named Salem of course) was a part of a pair of male cats that some owner must have just let out of their house to fend for themselves. The brother got fucked up by some other animal and had to be put to sleep, but the one we had was happy, healthy, and (I hope) adopted to a nice family. She thanked me since she apparently was trying to catch him for a while now (which doesn't make sense, the guy literally just walked up to us and began laying on our feet and loving to be picked up, indicating he wasn't a feral).

I dunno why I wrote all that stuff. You always could have called animal control to come pick up the cat, and if the cat was chipped (as they properly should be) then they can contact the owner.
