Other than having to actually queue for dungeons and raids, FFXIV can basically be played as a single player experience. You can skip literally every generic sidequest with no punishment whatsoever, even. The base game is still pretty rough with a lot of old MMO conventions, but once you get into the expansions it's full steam ahead with the prestige stuff.

And as someone who was pretty terrified of having to go into dungeons and raid in their first MMO while flying solo and not knowing what I was doing, just make you're you're going through the game's story as a DPS job and not trying to play a tank or healer through the Main Scenario and you'll be on easy street with zero stress. The base game is meant to be beatable by total randos playing together with the most basic degrees of competency, all the actually hard stuff is totally optional. Unless it's something that just came out like a day or two prior that everyone is still learning, you can be carried in the actual large scale content even if you're completely incompetent at that time (and it's typically very little effort to get competent, it will happen naturally).

FFXIV let's you play and level every single job in the game on the same character so you're not locking yourself into anything by picking a class that feels easier/more comfortable to you at that time even if your end game goal is to be a crazy YuGiOh man tossing heals with his card deck that he draws from in the middle of fights.

I really can't stress enough here that 2 months ago my stance on MMOs is that they were a completely worthless genre that is not actually capable of having good content, and they were all just glorified chatrooms. Jump to now, and FFXIV is one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. And even though I power played it to catch up to current content insanely fast, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from taking it slow. Even the director's stance is clear: if you're not having fun, then stop playing for now, and come back when you're think you'll have fun again. I literally did not even join this game's equivilant of a guild or add a person to my friends list until 2 days ago, and I did not feel hindered flying solo in the slightest.
