I love all 3 that I've played so far Well, him letting go of Makoto and allowing her to live a normal life was him shedding all aspects of his past and fully embracing his future as a crazy fuck. When she got shot was when he really dove into the persona and decided he was done pretending. The other two showed him how care free he could be, but Makoto gave him something to really fight for. You can see that in the rest of the series with how he treats and interacts with Kiryu, who is the only other person he will literally do anything for (and one other person I won't say).
