Asking someone's real name is almost always a bigoted attack to be frank.

Ive never seen someone ask for that reason. Its always because the name told is a known shortened version of a longer name or some alternative that isnt common and/or sounds weird to the person. Also, certain social situations where people ask for legal name.

My mother in-laws real given name is Nikki, but people always think its short for Nicole, so she often gets, Is that your real name or Is that short for Nicole? There is no ill-intent there.

Then you have nicknames that to most people would sound like nicknames, but someone may have been named something unusual by their parents. Dont know why thatd be bigoted, just cuz someone chose to name their kid Princess or Vader, etc.
