I don't mean gut reaction as in literally self defense. I mean his deciding to kill her was a gut reaction to what had just happened. He wasn't planning to kill her before she tried to kill him, that much is obvious. Her actions are what directly make him decide to kill. It's very much a "Holy shit, they're trying to kill me.
