They have, or can have, a similar base, although a lot of ranch dressings will have buttermilk added to them, while that's not as often an ingredient in bleu cheese dressing. The difference is that once you have the base, bleu cheese dressing basically just has bleu cheese added to it (and sometimes spices like salt, pepper, and garlic), but ranch has a whole other set of spices added to it.

Bleu cheese dressing is **NOT** just ranch with bleu cheese added to it.
