I didn't think it terrible at the time, but it was massively disappointing on almost every level. Most people I know liked the original though, including me. It's not that I think it was a great movie or anything. I don't think anyone would argue that. I think it's probably just because we were preteens/teenagers when we first saw it and were just excited to see these characters in a movie. Now we probably just remember it fondly because of nostalgia.
