Unfortunately, we dont get either of those things. We dont even get a fun resolution to his tension with Hiyoko because she dies too soon. Thats another possible interesting arc that winds up getting cut short, and what Fuyuhiko is left to do is a lot less interesting than what I thought might happen. He justsort of exists. There is a redemption arc here on the back end of things, sure, but it is ruined by a couple of factors. First, as I mentioned above, I absolutely hated his character for the first two chapters, and he had reached such a nadir I wasnt really willing to give him a second chance. He had spent the first two chapters being absolutely miserable, so why would I possibly root for him to get redemption? All things considered, he was a terrible human being. Hes the leader of a violent crime gang and responsible for the murder of a high school girl before the game starts. And then he tries to murder a second and is only saved from doing so by Peko. His defense of just wanting to talk to Mahiru is complete bullshit, by the way. He drugs Hiyoko and orchestrates the two of them coming at different times and he hides the baseball bat on the scene. Him straight up lying to us with a jeez guys I just wanted to talk is a lie and Im not even sure he believes it himself. He tries to kill Mahiru in that scene because she basically tells him murder is bad and he shouldnt have done it, and he responds by trying to commit a second murder. He doesnt deserve a chance at redemption because he is seconds away for killing Mahiru for an incredibly dumb reason. Then when hes not plotting to actively kill someone, he snarls at us and is just generally a shitty human being long enough for us to form a lasting impression of him. And, after all of this, Im supposed to root for him? Im supposed to be ok with him after everything hes done and after the writers essentially spent two chapters goading me into hating him? No, no I dont think I will. Thanks for the offer, game, but Ill continue disliking him if its all the same to you.

And, more importantly, I dont think the back end of his character arc is all that interesting. Peko gives him a second chance at life, but the game doesnt really have him do anything with it. Sure, hes nicer to everyone now, but without his little dog snarl hes just sort of boring. I wanted him to actually do something or make some grand stand or contribute in some major way, but the grand sum of his character development seems to be he isnt a complete asshole to everyone every chance he gets. Like, he isnt some super altruistic amazing individual. Hes not the heart of the group. Hes not inspiring people to greater things. Hes literally just not threatening to kill everyone because hes SUCH a big tough super strong guy seriously guys I swear. It is the absolute least you can do as a human, and Im not really all that interested in him behaving sort of like what a halfway decent individual acts like. It would be like if someone spent the first two chapters kicking puppies, and then at the start of chapter three resolved to stop kicking puppies. Great. But Im going to be more attached to the non-awful people that werent kicking puppies in the first place.

Also, just throwing this out there, hes kind of shitty towards Peko all things considered. I know a lot of this has to do with his responsibilities of being a yakuza, but Peko is so beaten down by her role that she has a terrible understanding of herself as an individual. She sees herself as nothing more than a tool for Fuyuhiko to use as he sees fit, and he is at least partially to blame for that. I know he struggles to get emotions out, but it is very clear that up until the very end here, Peko barely views herself as a human. Fuyuhiko is trying to get her to understand, but he obviously doesnt do enough and it winds up getting her killed because of it. This is someone that is 100% devoted to him in every possible way and loves him unconditionally and he cant even manage to blurt out hey youre important to me before it is too late? So many things here couldve been avoided if Fuyuhiko could just be open with his feelings. I know he feels regret for it and he is at least trying to get Peko to understand this by the end, but he is also directly responsible for both Mahirus and Pekos death, and his lackluster face turn at the end of the game isnt enough to make me forget that.

So Fuyuhiko has a lot of stuff working against him, in my eyes. He has one amazing scene and then a whole game worth of content Im honestly not that interested in. His final farewell honoring Peko at the end of the game was nice too, I suppose, but beyond that and the end of the second case, I really wasnt interested in his character. He spends too long being awful, and then his turnaround at the end isnt enough to atone for all the stuff I had to put up with earlier. He isnt funny or fun or interesting or even all that remarkable. Hes kind of dull, honestly, and in a game full of characters with big, unique personalities, Fuyuhiko post-trauma is just kind of a guy. I hate him prior to the ending of chapter 2 and was completely indifferent about him afterwards. He has a bad personality and then he basically has no personality. It was so dull, that by the end of the game I kind of wished he kept his heel personality. Sure, I didnt like it, but at least I felt something for it. By the time he saunters across the finish line, all I really felt for him was apathy.
