They don't care about whether you actually did it, only that they have someone to blame for it. That's why you don't talk without a lawyer present. I know a police chief who started out in the 70s and was told "What you do is you scream at them and bang on the table until they confess. If they don't then just scream and bang louder until they break" He says it's not like that anymore, but it shows the mindset of cops.
