17.) Shadowrun (Genesis, 1994)

I have a long history of loving games based on tabletop RPGs but this game may in fact be my favorite. See the reason why I like games like this is that the mechanics are based on rules that are easy to understand. No mysterious stats that may or may not do anything and require experimentation to deduce. They're rules you can look up and understand and build out in different ways. Shadowrun in particular - the SNES game is usually looked on with more fondness but for me this game was way way better and easier to understand and play.

The game is a top down shooter action-rpg and is a bit janky - in order to make money you can take runs on behalf of a Mr.Johnson who serves as a go between for missions. You can do generic missions in order to build up income but there was also a big overarching mission. Your brother Michael went on a shadowrun and sent you a message showing he and his team getting ambushed. He left you a few clues and his last location - a worn down dump of a motel in Redmond in the suburbs of Seattle.

You follow the story bit by bit and discover the grand conspiracy that was out to kill your brother after he saw something he should NOT have seen and its up to you, his former partner and whoever else you want to hire to come help you.

For me though, the thing that makes this game great is the atmosphere. Everything feels grimy and tense and as you are walking around doing your runs there are these random encounters you need to navigate that can make your life easier or way way harder.
