#20 Age of Rifles (PC, 1996)

Age of Rifles is one of the more formative games for me in general, far broadening my horizons and giving me a love for historical miniatures that was a big part of my getting into the irl hobby world. And this game was basically a digital historical minis game complete with unit construction and customization.

This is in some ways less a game and more a game engine with scenarios built in detailing most major wars that took place between 1846, the year the modern rifle was first used in combat, and 1905 when the rifle was replaced with better guns. If only for its intensely dedicated civil war battle simulator aspects this would have been an incredible game but it also covers the Franco-Prussian war and the other wars of German Unification, it has the Boer Wars, it has every single one of them with real life force strengths and weapons and all of that. The game places the proper amount of emphasis on terrain features and it was really cool.

But beyond that you could customize your own battlefields and forces and try to see how these battles would play out and it was just really cool and i spent countless hours tinkering with it.
