Magic tends to have better range, better damage, can counter from any distance within range, and refills itself automatically every battle for free.

It's kinda dumb how much magic is better than weapons in this game. The best weapons are the ones that are also essentially just magic like levin sword+
Magic's issue mostly comes from lack of flexibility and very limited enemy phase. For the most part the people who hit hardest with magic can neither take a hit well, nor do they have the strength to actively double (in Maddening). Which means most attacks are single heavy hits. Great for chipping or killing off weakened enemies, but often not able to one round on their own.

The bigger issue is combat arts. No mage is going to match the offensive performance of Swift Strikes, Hunter's Volley, or Point-Blank Volley. Even discounting brave abilities, all weapon users have the ability to temporarily increase their attack for a single attack to potentially get a kill they couldn't based on weapon might alone. If Dorothea is coming short of a kill by three points with Agnes Arrow, there is nothing she can do. If Ferdinand is short a kill by three points he can Tempest Lance and reach it.

This all matters much less outside of Maddening, where most units double most enemies so the value of single hit combat arts are much less and even the value of Brave arts are dismissed.
