I think the number 1 reason is that he has access to the Fire spell. His speed may not be great but the spell being so light lets him double often which helps him tremendously. Plus, magic tends to be overall more useful in hand since defense is usually higher that resistance so that helps as well. Magic tends to have better range, better damage, can counter from any distance within range, and refills itself automatically every battle for free. It's kinda dumb how much magic is better than weapons in this game.
