From what I know about it, the main LBX franchise is basically just a modern-day (and less girly) version of Angelic Layer, right down to both having the same premise of people buying/customizing mechanical figures and have them fight against each other. The franchise did well for a bit (I remember it had an anime and a 3DS game too) but it lost momentum and died quietly. Later on, some artist saw the mecha designs from the franchise, thought "I could turn those into anime girls and make a bunch of money", and bought the rights to the designs so he could make LBX Girls. Gundam also has a series like that called Gundam Build Fighters and Build Divers. They fight with their plastic models, and it seems that Danball Senki has the same concept.
