I think y'all are crazy and are just fellating the first episode being what it is to justify you liking it a ton. lol Like, if you like it that's totally fine, but there's no reason for it to be an entire episode that if you remove it, you lose absolutely nothing in the series. It's not a great move and like Aecioo said, it's not brave. It's just poorly paced. You can keep the episode surreal while also including things to intrigue the audience. If any other show did something like this for their first episode, it would be wildly panned for not roping the audience in enough.

Like I said though, this series does a lot of good stuff and I'm really enjoying it, and they clearly have a solid handle on writing. But that first episode is just fluff and a bad choice, considering the backlash they've received.

Couldn't disagree with this assessment more.

The first episode sets the bar for the wonderful performances of Olsen and Bettany and includes some of the best comedic and creepy moments of the show, like the choking scene. Just because the plot doesn't advance at 100mph for the first 20 minutes of the show doesn't mean it has pacing issues - it just means they're laying the groundwork for what's to come. They have to establish an actual status quo before they start tearing it down in every subsequent episode.

I feel like people forget that in the age of binge watching.

Also don't know what backlash you're talking about.
