They fought to the death both knowing it had to happen, and Gundham own beliefs meant he couldn't just give up, because he would be a hypocrite if he didn't fight back. However, one could argue some of frankly absurd defenses for himself as he was closed in on show he wasn't putting in much effort, potentially due to his feelings for Sonia.
