20) Fire Emblem Fates - Desire Below (Flow)
Series ranking: 2 of 2
https://youtu.be/-4_cx74mypE
Prelim score: 9.3/10
Score: 9.4/10 (Amazing)
Composer: Hiroki Morishita
VGMC History: VGMC 14 (Lost R5 to YOKAI-Disco)
Favorite part: https://youtu.be/-4_cx74mypE?t=56

Very intense. Pretty frantic, actually. Lots of chromatics at the start, which is one of those things I have a nerdy liking towards! The theme kind of gets a hold of itself once the 16th notes become triplets at 0:23 and kind of move to the back stage, which is how I like it, actually. Still intense and dangerous, though. Then comes the You are the Oceans Grey Waves theme, yay! And, as usual, Morishita finds a way to put harmonies and key changes under it that are unique to this track.

This gets used to help transition into the next part, my favorite part of the whole thing! Its got this SWING to it, but its not a happy-go-lucky swing to it (but not really in a jazzy way) its still very dire and serious. But WOW, it sounds amazing. Ive never heard anything like it. All those 7ths/9th leaps in there are simply :). Then when you put the bells melody above doing slow triplets over it, WOW! Absolutely beautiful! Dire, serious, and beautiful at the same time that takes skill to compose! On top of that you still get those fast triplet patterns mixed in ahhhh, its good to bask in. A crazy good trio of Then it finally gets a bit of a reprieve with some soft organ towards the end. Beautiful harmonies theresounds very early 20th-century classical (the more I listen to it the better it is!), some cool dissonances, and we continue to get some polyrhythms as a bonus.

As a whole, this track makes a very full display of Morishitas talent! Only complaint is that somehow, the energy is a bit lacking? Im not sure why it feels that way to me.

THIS is one of the two tracks I've been vocal about that I supported in VGMC XIV. This is feel good music to me despite how loud it is! Somehow it comforts me consistently just hearing it Its because of all the different styles covered here (even though Im not sure what to call all of them)!! Thats a big reason its as high as it is.

In the intro, I love dominant chords w/ both the 3rd and the #9! Plus, the dark timbre of the piano is just perfect! It starts off lovely with the strings backing it up, too. Great dissonance by the vocalist just a hair before 0:14, too. Then it becomes EPIC beyond belief one of my FAVORITE parts when the HUGE electric guitars/basses come in. What thick orchestration, what TASTEFUL duet playing! Very funky reprieve from the loudness at 0:53 good backup vocals and the piano is nice and dark, blending in perfectly. Then you got the chorus at 1:10 :) :), this section is an absolute classic! Gotta love those big major IV chords (in minor key)!!! And those backup vocals really fill things out. 1:28 provides a piano break, only to go back to the Forte stuff again mid-phrase, which FILLS me with excitement, OMG OMG OMG *huge breath* OMG OMG OMG. Gets REALLY funky at 1:46 before hitting the repeat sign (for some material) The second time around I love certain details, for example, the grindy offbeat chords just before the refrain again at 2:30 is WAY too cool!!!

3:05 is like, something you wouldnt quite expect, despite the variety What a massive prog section thats completely unrelated to everything else, but somehow it just works!!! That MADHOUSE organ (my favorite instrument for this style)with its wide vibrato with its deliberate dissonances (love when it goes SUPER low and its all warbly), the surprise upward chromatic shift with the guitar going at it with its ambiguous tonality, the shift into 12/8, the final unison virtuosic stuff yeah, way to make this track even better!! As for stuff after, I really like how the use of the major chord resolution using the 3rd to shift to one final key change to finish it off. Its a VERY satisfying ending.
