Yes, it's a good option. There are jobs that you can pick that will literally keep you out of a combat situation entirely, even if you are mobilized. This is probably the biggest misconception. You get in shape, learn respect, get paid, have a place to live, have 3 meals a day that you don't pay for. You learn skills like survival, and how to fire a rifle, I don't care how much you hate guns, target shooting is fucking fun. I served 4 years and I have never regretted it, and it directed my life in a good way. I was a truck driver in the Army, and I was also range control for a year, which is the paddle holder and safety guide on the rifle range. It was a good time, I drove a lot of cool vehicles, fired a lot of neat weapons, including an under barrel grenade launcher, granted it fired a paint grenade.
