Why does it seem like you're just not into a lot of AAA Western games? Not that I am or anything, but still!

You might be unto something - I think I've always been a little more into Japanese games than Western ones because I was raised on Nintendo and Final Fantasy and I spent a lot of time watching dubbed anime like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh growing up. These days I'm probably more interested in indie games all things considered. I do find a lot of AAA games kind of dull in terms of art and aesthetics. Even the ones I do enjoy, like New Vegas, have a bit of that sense. I think it's partially because they tend to be so high-budget they become kind of risk-averse, but like you say which ones I like depends a lot on genre, so maybe it's also because the really popular western genres like FPS and sandbox never clicked as much for me. Then again, the majority of my 2010 top 5 were western AAA games. Maybe I just find them a little hit and miss.

Unpopular opinion: I thought Heavy Rain was better than Life is Strange. I played both when they were new. Life is Strange had more potential to be sure, but I was really unsatisfied in the end after very promising earlier chapters.

Yeah despite being a mess I do think Heavy Rain is better than TWD especially if you factor in anything past the first season. I haven't played Life is Strange myself, but from what little I've seen it seems just as corny and clumsily written as Heavy Rain.

I would personally rate them Walking Dead > Life is Strange > Heavy Rain. All three games do have a lot of plot conveniences and melodrama, but I think Walking Dead and Life is Strange land their emotional moments a little better than Heavy Rain, where all the characters are so robotic and one-dimensional that I find it hard to get invested. I think dynamics like Lee's with Clementine or Ben's character arc at least have some emotional resonance, and Chloe is a more interesting character because she's very abrasive which makes a lot of people dislike her but she does have some other sympathetic qualities that make different players quite attached to her.
