#76. Shovel Knight (PC, 2014)

Shovel Knight is obviously inspired by the old NES platformer games, and captures that feeling so well. It plays just as well as any of the top of the line games from back then. There's enough collecting and secrets to encourage you to explore and admire every area, but not enough to seem like a tedious slog. The knight bosses come in a good variety and provide interesting boss fights.

The game also provided a bunch of extra content by letting you play through as other knights. I'm a little torn on this for some reason. On one hand, more content and more characters and everything is great! The new characters all play differently too. But I think because I played characters back-to-back-to-back, it started to make the levels wear on me. I think I just overdid it with the game in the moment. Maybe I'll go back in a couple years and have this rocket back up my list when things seem fresh again.
