#81. Mega Man Legends (PS1, 1998)

Okay, so last game I posted about early 3D games being something I wasn't very big on, but then, uh, here we, umm

So this has a few things working in its favor. The obvious thing being the inclusion of Mega Man in this. That character is kind of a big deal to me. But then it turns out, this game had other cool characters! The whole Bonne family is amazing and charming. I'm glad Tron Bonne pops up in other stuff, like Marvel vs Capcom games, from time to time. The Servbots are equally amusing. The Kattelox Island world isn't huge, but it has tons of personality. I think a big part of why I'm so high on this game is that it took just enough of something familiar that I loved, and added enough new things to make it a full new experience. If it was still mostly old Mega Man, with just some small twists, I might be mad that it wasn't like old Mega Man.

The way the game splits up the action helps keep it all fresh. There's exploring segments and boss fight segments and the casual things around town. The control is a little primitive, especially Mega Man's rotational turn speed, but the game is designed well enough with all that in mind anyway, so it's not as big an issue as it could be. The sequel is fun too, but I find the characters/interactions & areas to explore a little more enjoyable in the first game.
