If you save the wolf guy, he gives you a gold hairpin (which you can get more of later anyway) but Mog won't join you until later.

Mog dances are kinda like geomancy except it changes the background instead of being based on the current background - you get it by fighting at least one battle on a type of background (hence why I said earlier you would have to go out of the way to fight underwater with mog in the party at least once for the water dance)
