#97. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (PC, 1997)
This game apparently got a name change somewhere along the way as "Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time", I suppose to differentiate it from the older NES/PC game.
I loved this game as a kid. It's an edutainment game at its surface, but it's a good ol fashioned point and click adventure at its soul. Though a pretty basic one, but as a big Carmen Sandiego fan as a kid- of both the game shows and most of the other video games too (Where in the USA? and World?)- this one really appealed to me as it got out of the simple genre of "Get geography clue, then go place" to having a little contained thing to solve for your historical figures through time, asking to find out what they need, solving each timeline's little puzzle, and then figuring out where the thief is. I went back and looked at a playthrough of this game, and I can see why it appealed still,so I figure that's worth something. There's an Edison/Lightbulb stage, so that definitely had some biased appeal to me, and it had a lot of Lynne Thigpen, who was great as always as The Chief (RIP). No Rockapella sadly.
Anyway, this was an important game to me as a kid that I played a shit ton, and a lot of the history lessons from it really did stick with me, and the point and click adventure style puzzles you had to "solve" in each area were fun.

For example, Edison needed a spool of thread to finish a light bulb, but the Cotton Store (yeah) didn't want to sell it to you until the morning. So you had to borrow Edison's phonograph, place it outside the shop owner's home window, knock on the shop door to talk to the guard who calls the owner, the owner says "Do NOT give those rascals a spool of thread!", but you've recorded it, so then you go back later to the door with your recording and you have to play various parts of the recording to respond to the guard properly, including cutting off the "Do NOT" part so he just hears "give those rascals a spool of thread!" and that's how you get it. All while learning about the light bulb and Edison!

Anyway, Broderbund was the shit.
