American Idol is slightly different, but Survivor and especially Apprentice have individual events with their own prizes all throughout that basically function like mini game show segments. Like, if you took Weakest Link and stretched it out over two weeks, only had one person eliminated at a time, and filmed the stuff in between, does it stop being a game show?

The nature changes enough so that while it is still a game show, that ceases to be the most useful term to use, certainly to the point where being confused that the Apprentice is referred to as a "game show" over a "reality show" is reasonable. When you start empathizing the social aspects of a show, with recurring characters and relationships over one-time guests (yes, yes, Ken Jennings and champions, you know what I mean), the reality aspects dominate in people's minds

My point in particular about Survivor and American Idol wasn't so much that they're not game shows, but they're many people's prototypes for reality shows
