#91. Strider (PC, 2014)

This one was a nice surprise. I had played the original arcade Strider before, which was... unique. The 2014 version took some ideas from the old Strider a ninja with strong movement options moving through levels that aren't necessarily linear and decided to not just enhance those ideas, but to flesh it out into a full Metroidvania-style game.

The result was a very solid, very exciting game. The game had a good pace, with quick and fluid action. It kind of reminds me of Shadow Complex (which didn't quite make this list), but more colorful, action that's a little more fun, and with a much cooler main character. I really hope Capcom builds from here and gives us more Strider like this in the future.

#90. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (Xbox 360, 2013)

Brothers is a game that seems very simple on the surface, but is very clever and expresses a very touching story. Two brothers are on a journey to find a cure for their sick father. The two analog sticks control the two brothers, one stick for each. It's a little awkward, but creative, and works within the pace of the game.

Each of the brothers has their own unique traits, displayed through the various puzzles you encounter. The obvious one is that the older brother is larger and can reach and lift more things. The younger one is smaller, and can fit into smaller passages. The unique traits allow the two characters to really show their personalities, and having to work your thumbs separately, yet in tandem, helps the teamwork of the brothers on screen feel more real. The game is packed with a lot more emotion than you would expect, and it's just something that really stuck with me long after I played it.
