Whispers of a Machine Blue Edition (PC)

Oh wow. I wasn't expecting the game to be this good. Well first off this just hits my buttons. It's cyberpunk, but instead of being set in the city, you're actually a Fed out in the sticks set in the backdrop of an attempted AI Cataclysm, thus giving this post-apocalyptic post-cyberpunk feel. This change in setting and style, somewhat modifies the themes being tossed around---transhumanism and singularity--into a different perspective than what we always see. I won't spoil much of the plot but it is a very intriguing mystery with the usual neo-noir beats that is sure to tickle your investigative bones.

The worldbuilding is excellent and none too cliche, delivered by proxy of you: An augmented human capable of feats depending on your demeanor. Every playthrough gives you 2 of 6 possible powers based on 3 dominating moods and even more impressive is the combination of puzzle solutions utilizing the 6 powers in unique ways. And that's just the variable stuff. Your default powers include CSI/Detective Mode, an on the spot Lie Detector, and Super Strength. Despite the game's length (roughly 5-7 hours), it's clear that all these tools were carefully taken into consideration when it came to puzzle and world design.

Probably my favorite part is that you can pretty much ask any NPC about any other NPC and they will almost always have something to say beyond the usual "oh I don't know that guy" as being a tightly-knit small town, it would make sense that everybody should know everybody. You can even ask them about events beyond their scope and they will have a unique blurb or two to say about it, further reinforcing how even a low-profile murder can get into the town gossip. I really appreciate it when a dev attempts to worldbuild for worldbuild's sake.

Probably my only complaint would be that there are no save slots. Having 3 endings and 6 variable powers and 3 personality traits dictating those powers (as well as conversation options), its clear that the game wants you to keep replaying the game over and over which might be fun for those unique sequences but for the whole game? Ehhhh. Still, it's just a minor gripe. And I thoroughly recommend this surprisingly well-made adventure game. Start of the year and I already have what I think is gonna be one of my tops.

It's not so cliche anymore when it's happening to you.
