It's just the expected gameplay loop back then, instead of expecting you to try to get from checkpoint to checkpoint uninterrupted.

quick save -> walk into room -> get shot to death from some enemy that you can't see from the entrance or came out of some monster closet after you pass it -> quick load until you get past it without losing half your health -> quick save again.

the difficulty in Blood was also infamous for being bugged to hell. If you played on the lowest difficulty, the game actually loaded the health/damage stats for enemies from the hardest difficulty instead due to a pointer in the code pointing to the wrong place in the table. And as you'd expect from that, playing on the hardest difficulty being easier than intended for the same reason (pointing to the tables for medium difficulty.) Though I hope that would be fixed in the remastered version.
