Lagrange Point - Fighters Awaken Nominator: jangler 7.2 (7.2/0) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-NYq2kofg4 A Lagrange Point is a region of space in which the gravitational acceleration caused by two bodies balance each other such that the orbital period of an object situated at one is equal to the period of the other bodies, despite have a different orbital radius than either does to the center of mass. There are five Lagrange Points for any stable two-body system; three in a line between the two bodies, and two at a 60 degree angle (above and below) the other points. L1 is between the bodies, L2 behind the smaller one from the perspective of the other, L3 behind the larger body, L4 ahead of the smaller body's orbit and L5 behind it. Only the last two points are stable, and large collections of smaller objects known as "trojans" naturally cluster at these points. Jupiter has an extremely large collection of trojans, the result of billions of years of shepherding the solar system through its gravitational dominance. The other points are unstable, but quasi-stable halo orbits around them can still exist. With station-keeping, missions such as the JWST can orbit around the point for as long as necessary, keeping the locations of the Earth and Sun in the same relative position as it conducts its observations Who cares?.
