I think it's too soon because we are still reeling from the COVID bill, which already included more copyright law. Also, it seems like the soonest anything will happen with the new bill will be in a few months with a new Congress and President.

I don't want to defend Senator Tillis or the way his last bills got stuffed into a must-pass bill that neither representatives nor their constituents had time to read or comment on, but they are fairly tame compared to what is being proposed now. Frankly, this new thing is crazy and doesn't seem like it will go anywhere. The felony streaming provision seems to go after very specific forms of business that likely won't impact anyone. The CASE Act is ridiculously unconstitutional, but there are at least some people who think it will be mostly good for small-time creators. If not, it will get destroyed in court.

I'm not sure if you saw my other topic, but there is also new anti-porn legislation that was introduced last Friday. It would have a chilling effect on free speech, harm sex workers, and depending on how a provision against downloads is interpreted, give the courts a way to ban porn entirely. It's also got a catchy name that makes it hard to argue against.

At this point though, I'm kind of jaded. If they can generate enough fake moral outrage, they band together and pass evil shit in the name of doing something good, or *shudder* "common sense". If they can't, they just wait for the next "must pass" bill and bury whatever they want in there. If you call your representatives, they are either on the wrong committee to amend the bill or are of the opinion that the bill "must pass" so they can't do anything.

Democracy feels pretty dead in the United States to me.
