Still, these are slums in João Pessoa. This is the worst kind of neighborhood, people there are desensitized at this point.

Not much that hasn't been mentioned. They had been there for a while but still no signs of police or ambulance. The people surrounding him were "helping" him.
"Helping" obviously being a very loose term, they were all around the same building from where the guy came out of, so it's a safe guess they were all from the same gang. Or a good part at least.
That's about it I guess. What I meant is that understanding him made it all the more heart-racing.
