I wanted to expand on the movie's portrayal of Cynthia in my write-up, but I felt that the rest of what I had written made an ungainly fit, so instead I decided to type up a post here:

I'd argue it's pretty self-evident that her depiction was a blight on her film, as four of us pointed out; for myself, I can say that I might have placed it in my top 5 otherwise. However, I do think the character as written was important to the plot, low show act and all, and I think removing her outright would have rendered the movie a tad disjointed. The significance of Bob deciding to join our main trio was predicated on the implication that he was straight, which wouldnt have been there without a wife, and likewise, Bobs wife leaving him gave him a strong in-universe reason to abandon his existing life. Even Cynthias arguably demeaning routine felt more like an act of empowerment in the context of the events around it, which also established the risks and stakes of our main trios performance. Heck, the character could have still been Filipina on top of that without too many problems, but having her speak solely in English broken in a way that may very well have been the crucial inspiration for Jar Jar Binks was the totally unnecessary straw that broke the camels back, as far as I see it at least.
