Boobs.

The first time I remember the hormones kicking in and realizing why they were so great all comes down to a chance encounter at the grocery store. It was nearly Halloween and my family was stocking up on items for a party and candy to give out to costumed door bell pushers. I had to go back a few aisles to pick up something overlooked and there she was---Elvira.

More accurately, a life-size stand of her balancing a tray containing Coors beer. It was like being smacked in the face with pure sex appeal. The pale skin gleaming from her revealing costume while holding a tray of a forbidden drink meant for adults was not something I dreamed about encountering in the middle of the supermarket. This is the stuff you discover in a darkened room with only the glow of a muted TV screen that you pray your parents won't notice when waking up to use the bathroom at 1 A.M.

I knew of Elvira before that fateful run in, but I honestly can't say I recollect seeing any episodes of her show that ran during 1981-1986. I wish I had as she hosted so many wonderful oddities like The Devil's Rain, Lemora, Pigs, The Tombs of the Blind Dead, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, and so many more. She returned to the airwaves in 2010 but it wasn't the same. The films were now easy to come by thanks to the home video market and in better condition. It didn't help that the films picked were more horrible than horrifying. Yet Elvira maintained her valley girl double entendre sense of humor that became just as much of a character trademark as her jet black beehive hairdo and slinky dress. The films were worse, but Elvira hadn't changed. Like a gothic porcelain doll preserved in time.

The Elvira character is a perfect fit for a horror movie host. Sexy, funny, and just enough of her during a two hour running time. Imagine my surprise to pick up a Fangoria Magazine in 2001 and learn about a new feature length movie with Elvira as the star. Crazier still is that it would be the second film revolving around her character. Huh? A film with a movie host in the spotlight? How does that work? With pure camp. I had my doubts, but when the credits rolled on Elvira: Mistress of the Dark I had become a believer.

What started as a take on 1950's movie host Vampire has become its own character thanks to Cassandra Peterson. She's part of pop culture and became the gatekeeper into the world of horror cinema for many viewers. She's the representation of sex appeal and macabre for generations and demonstrates how the horror genre can be fun.
