The 2020 figure represents a 234% increase compared to the first 9 months last year as in 2019, 1811 Americans renounced their citizenships through September and by the end of that year, it grew to 2072 The previous record for most citizenship renunciation was set in 2016 when there were 5411 and that number has already surpassed that before the end of this year In the past decade, more than 37,000 Americans filed paperwork to give up citizenship There has a been a huge interest in 2020 in Americans looking to live elsewhere in the world where figures were in decline in 2017 but then went up after Trump won The record number of this is the tip of the iceberg as a lot of embassies and consulates abroad stopped making renunciation appointments this spring due to COVID-19 as Alistar Bambridge said the majority of these cases were because of Trump While polls show Trump is likely to lose to Joe Biden, the expats can't bear the thought of 4 more years as he said these are willing to give up their citizenship so they wouldn't be linked to his political policies Bambridge said "There are some US citizens so desperate to give up their citizenship that they are booking holidays to the Bahamas and Caicos Islands or other far off places" The other people giving up citizenship are those avoiding the burdensome taxation laws as the US is only one of 2 countries in the world that taxes citizens regardless where they live.
