That's one of my major issues with DR2. Mahiru is normal, fine. But the rest of the cast all feel like they boil down to a singular character trait that gets exaggerated to the extreme. So with every character, either you REALLY like them, or you REALLY don't like them, because there's very little in the way of nuance. Four of my bottom six characters from the entire franchise come from DR2, and Mahiru isn't among them. She's 12th/16 though.

That's also probably a reason I like Soda more than a lot of people do. He's got a super obvious, obnoxious trait, but unlike the Chef, who he shares that trait with, there's actually more to the character that makes it make sense. The character is annoying, but they actually put thought and effort into why.

It's also why I think I break with people and don't like the punk rock chick who seems to be popular, since there's just nothing to her. She's just her gimmick. Sure, it's a fun gimmick, but that's all there really is to the character.

Completely agree with all of this, actually (although I'm not a fan of Soda, he's definitely much more tolerable than Teruteru). While I dislike Mahiru, it's partly because she was written to be a realistic person as opposed to a gimmick. My dislike for her feels more natural than my dislike for, say, Hifumi or Teruteru or Ibuki, who never once came across as actual people to me. Characters like those are just black holes in the narrative.
