When you're in a sea of applicants, you need to stand out, and appearing eager for the job is a good way to do that. When I applied for the training program that lead to my current job, I was one of a few thousand. I applied, didn't hear anything for a few days, and so I emailed them to ask on my application status. The very next day, I was scheduled for an in-person interview and test, and it all went great from there.
