From my understanding, GMW was consistent with the middle school and early high school seasons of BMW from a tone and content perspective. The big difference is that as a show on ABC, BMW was able to age with its audience. GMW was stuck on a channel where the audience is perpetually 13 and younger. That kinda kills any chance of the show maturing.

for the most part yes
it was very similar to the first couple seasons of boy meets world
but even back then boy meets world could tackle bigger issues better like the time cory didnt care to learn about history cause the bad stuff doesnt exist anymore. only to come home to see erics one off girlfriend crying because someone was screaming racist slurs at her for being Asian at the mall which taught cory that these things arent just in the past.

girl meets world occasionally tried to tackle serious issues like that but they never did it with grace
