I really liked Muv-Luv Alternative, which is the third game in the series. (Or second depending on who you ask--the first game which you can find as "Muv-Luv" is basically two separate games bundled as one, even if I don't think it was ever released that way.)

The first game is almost universally agreed upon to be very bad, but playing through it is also somewhat needed in order to understand parts of Alternative. The second game (or, second chapter of the first game you want), is a game I enjoyed quite a bit, but you'll find varying opinions on it.

Basically if the premise of Muv-Luv Alternative is something that appeals to you and you're okay with the idea that you will have to wade through a good quantity of shit in order to reach something potentially great than go ahead. Muv-Luv Alternative is probably a top 5 VN for me.

All that said, there's probably other stuff I'd recommend first if only because they don't come with all the above baggage like this series does.
