There's like 12 churches to each gas station here, it's one of the most religion heavy regions of the US. My wife's dad is a primitive Baptist preacher, so is her uncle, granddad, great granddad, dating back to the 1500s. Some of the most fair and understanding people i've met, me and her lived together before we got married, her dad and granddad were fully aware that i'm atheist, and never in all these years a judgement placed, a finger pointed, never been preached to. They accept me as a good person who doesn't believe in God, but has a fair level of morality. I try to be good to everyone, I hit a breaking point, but it's rare.

My stance has always been, and I have told them both this, that I feel like it should be a relationship, and a faith that I don't feel and have never felt, and I don't want to lie and pretend to save face, rather just be honest. They are perfectly fine with that, and fine with me never attending a church service. Out of respect, on her granddad's 70th anniversary of preaching, I went that day because he's been more of a dad to me in the last 18 years than my real dad ever was.
