You could do this in the first game most of the time, albeit with a few stragglers that make it through. This one seems deliberately designed to stop you from doing that. I've played seven levels - which is another thing, this is apparently the halfway point, that's half the size of the first game - and I'm still not at the point where it's not a huge struggle every time. Even the last level was deliberately designed this way.
