The internet just got weirded out by them way back when because the Sonic fanbase was a lot of people's first contact with OCs and furry porn and such. We're too old to be scandalized about that anymore.

Sonic's fanbase was at least partly responsible for the creation of the Sonic Cycle because of the way games kept getting hugely hyped by them before they ended up being shit - Sonic 06 being the prime example - so you can say there's an extent to which they were mocked for being "delusional" or "apologists".

But as for the rest of it, I would say that what is or isn't "toxic" has changed over time. Sonic was toxic at that time because what we found toxic then is different; this board used to viciously rail against, like, DeviantArt as well, because we were teenagers. Now it rails against, like, fascism and bullying so furry OCs are essentially harmless by comparison

I guess it's semantics? But I would argue it was toxic by the standards b8, or the internet in general, generally had at that time.
