I think it's akin to intrusive thoughts? Like it's saying, you can make the choice yourself and deal with the guilt of actively being involved, as either way someone dies.

OR you can let the 'darker' side of you (the one that goes "Man, I could totally just punch that baby if I wanted") make the call for you and you won't remember it.

You then end up with the "what if" feeling of, would the darker side of you NOT pull the lever just so you could experience the worse outcome? Do you really have that in you? You'll never know.

I assume it's based on Jungian psychology which is also where the Persona games get much of their inspiration.

And to think I felt dumb for thinking it was a Persona thing lol, I know nothing of Jung or what he looked like.
