I would recommend From the New World then. Adapted from a print novel, not a manga or light novel so it already has a more serious atmosphere. Parasyte, Hellsing, and Devilman Crybaby seems up your alley too. Maybe Akame Ga Kill. Id also recommend Fafner but the visuals are really outdated and it takes awhile to get really rolling.
