You can probably complete all content with the free characters but that doesn't change that progression is still gated through the Gacha. Lot's of things are summon exclusive like the constellation unlocks even for the free characters. You'll see in almost any gacha game that high end players do shit like beat the hardest content with the worst characters/equipment just for fun. Most people can't play on that level though.
