Tales of Eternia beated

Yuuup I mentioned how I appreciated the Destiny bump over Phantasia, well this bump up is like the full (2D) realization that I'm truly happy with. As I mentioned with Destiny, the (party) cast was much more developed than the Phantasia crew, but on their own they still weren't really a batch of characters I liked that strongly, like if I were to rank them against other game casts I do like, they're just more fleshed out than Phantasia's bare bones.

Eternia's cast however hrmmm, it's been a real ride with them. Early on Farah was really the biggest driving force which made me like her a lot starting out but that role kinda faded a bit and became more of a supporting member than the driver she was - tbf tho she still gets the best backstory development than of the Rashead crew. Still she's certainly by the top for the overall series (Phantasia-Destiny). Reid was the opposite, frustrating to start as he really didn't wanna do anything but he gradually does grow into the roll as a hero fairly well and that development is noticed, I really liked his Trials focusing on understanding others situations, he did really feel like he had gained perspective to eventually take on the hero's role he lacked to start. Keele's a total ass to start, the typical elitist intellectual and so throughout the game he becomes more of a team player, he starts trusting and caring for the party and is open to discovering what's real instead of relying on the knowledge he grew up on. Meredy not as much character development but she carries the game's storyline and she's just really enjoyable throughout - like that the game doesn't show her own personal flaws in a relatable way like the others, but there's just not really the change the other cast members got. Overall I certainly developed a good feel for this cast which I really hadn't in the previous games so far.... the fact that I'm writing such a large paragraph on this says it all. Also - even the sub-characters Chat & Max, while still minimal, had much more purpose than Destiny's side-characters, and Phantasia's Chester isn't even worth mentioning.

Last time with Destiny I also mentioned how the story really fell apart with its lackluster villains - Eternia while not that fantastic, didn't feel like nobody rando, but instead carried a relevant meaning with the cast. Dhaos is still untouchable so far but Eternia's not bad. Story ranking obviously mixes in here and I'm a bit conflicted - I think I prefer Phantasia just by simplicity still, while Eternia is kinda complicated with its concepts & terminology, buuut it works. so it's a close call between the two. It's not at all like when I was looking back on Destiny and I just don't care about its arcs.

sooo hrmmm... I guess overall I'd go Eternia > Phantasia >> Destiny, probably giving Eternia's advantage to its modernizations, but that the rest is still decent and meaningful enough that I don't feel too conflicted taking it over Phantasia, the way I couldn't bring Destiny ahead.

now to figure out what next

Also for lmao the more games I play the more I miss Dhaos, I bumped him up in my ranking after Destiny and I think I'm certain I'll be bumping him up again after Eternia. He's just becoming such a measuring stick so far in these playthroughs.
